Recently, Michael D. Schiele, with Comprehensive Retirement Solutions of Carmel, Indiana, an affiliate of Foresight Financial Management, was awarded one of The Financial Planning Association’s® (FPA®) 2011 Diversity Scholarships, which recognizes top professionals who are working to expand diversity in the financial services profession. The merit-based scholarship recipients earned a one-year FPA membership and free registration and travel expenses to September’s FPA Experience 2011 in San Diego, California.
“FPA continues to encourage diversity within the financial planning community in order to engage more unique ideas and perspectives,” said Marvin W. Tuttle, CAE, executive director and CEO of the Financial Planning Association. “The FPA Diversity Scholarship winners share our commitment to promote a financial planning environment that embraces diversity for both consumers and professionals.”
The scholarship is awarded to financial services students and professionals willing to demonstrate and act upon an intense desire to promote diversity in the financial services profession.
Criteria for applicants include demonstrating and acting upon an intense desire to affect the diversity of the financial services profession, including but not limited to:
- Raising awareness of the profession in diverse communities;
- Serving diverse communities with financial services; and
- Increasing professional opportunities for diverse communities within the financial services profession.
For Schiele, after 20 years of outside employment, he felt called to the profession from his personal experiences seeing the African-American community as being under-served. His passion to teach others how to create and maintain wealth through preparation and discipline has made him a sought after speaker with many non-profit organizations, and opened doors for him to work with professional athletes from the NFL and the NBA. When Michael is not assisting clients, he is volunteering with local organizations such as theUnited Way, or serving in his local church as lay-minister.
The Diversity Scholarship Program is sponsored by the FPA Diversity Committee, who also chose the winners. Their mission is to develop strategies to raise awareness and promote inclusiveness of diverse communities including but not limited to: age, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation in the financial planning profession. FPA strives to increase professional opportunities for the widest spectrum of people so that all may join and thrive in the financial planning profession.
